We are young people living in London, UK and we want to help young people, who find themselves in difficult situations have the resources and confidence to cook nutritious meals on a budget, especially coming up this Christmas period.
Tyra is living in independent accommodation, her father died; her mother turned to drugs and couldn't look after her. Placed into care at 9, she has been moved to 8 different foster carers in the past 9 years. Now Tyra is living on a budget of 12 a week for food. Because she has never been taught to cook, she struggles to feed herself. In London there are many young people like Tyra who don't have the means or knowledge to cook a healthy meal on a low budget. We want to help this to change.
We are developing a free course which will cover shopping on a budget, nutritional training, how to waste less food and a cooking lesson. This is for young people in Tyra's or similar situations and will give them the skills not only to cook healthy meals, but also educate them on the importance of reducing food waste and sustainable living
This project will give at least 50 young people, separated form their families, the resources and means to look after themselves. It will encourage them to eat healthily and share this knowledge with others. This Christmas these young people will and will know how to eat well and build healthier lives.
