Salariin Kampuchea is to supply young adults in Siem Reap with English language, computer literacy classes and a Life Skills programme to help them enter the job market in Cambodia successfully. Over the last three months there have been many positive changing activities and achievements within our organization, which continues to work hard to make a positive impact in the community.
Graduation and Certificate Party
In January 2014, we celebrated a certificate and farewell party for our students at our two schools who graduated their English and computer course.
49 Salariin Kampuchea students completed the English Let’s Go 3 class during the course of the year. 18 students completed the English Let’s Go 5 class. 19 completed the English starter class and 13 graduated successfully from the Pre-Intermediate class as well as 14 graduated successfully from the English Intermediate class and 13 students, some of them pictured above, took up employment as English language teachers, hotel staff, restaurant staff and administrative assistants.
74% of beginner students in the English class scored higher than 50% in class assignments and examinations; 13 Pre-intermediate students were able to speak fluent English and wrote both descriptive and comparative essays and 14 Intermediate students were able to speak fluently and write advantages and disadvantages of different topics by using ven-diagram. Teaching tools used for lessons included cooperative learning and bloom taxonomy.
For the period of time, there are 29 computer students graduated successfully from advanced Ms. Word and Excel. Our computer student, Main Panha stated his feeling about computer lesson with SK “My name is Vichet. I am very happy with my computer class. When I have learnt a computer lesson with Salariin Kampuchea, I get a basic computer knowledge and skill such what computer component, software and hardware are. I can use MS. Word Processor and spreadsheet effectively so it is easy for me to look for any admin employment that requires a basic computer skill.”
There are thirty one students join the football teams remaining four teams, group under 13, 14 and 16 years old. They are proud of themselves that they have rights to play and participating in the Junior Soccer League organized by Globalteer Organization. One student, Sok Chamroeun shares the feeling about football. “I am Panha, 15 years old.I think sport is important as it makes more fun, good health, more friends. I am so happy to join football team”
Children protection lesson
In December 2013, our English teacher conducted child protection lessons to our English students during the class. They learnt about 5 main child rights, kind of abuses and how to report to stakeholders when abuses occurring by different means.
We currently have agreements with 5 businesses where SK students can undertake internship and apprenticeship activities. There are 26 students got apprenticeships to work at hotels.
Change and Movement
In mid-January 2014, after certificate celebration and farewell party at our school in the town, we moved our school and office to a bit further to a countryside where another school is located. With a new school and office, there are more 200 disadvantaged children registered. We engage their parents in the value of education so all parents have to come to sign agreement with us as well as attend in the parent meeting to discuss about their children learning and encourage them to support the children learning.
We have many exciting plans for the next few months. We will conduct Spelling Bee competition for all English students. We plan to decorate our classrooms with painting and drawing and our students will assist and support in the event. Our computer students will conduct a group teaching. We continue to participate in the Siem Reap Junior Soccer League.
We would like to thank all donors who supported us though GlobalGiving. With the help of our partners at GlobalGiving and you, we hope to keep building on this and moving forward with our non-formal education programme.
