Project #898

Provide Education to AIDS Orphans in Rural Uganda

by The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project

YOU are changing the lives of amazing children like Anthony!

Anthony's a 9-year-old primary four student at Nyaka Primary School. Each morning he and his sisters walk for an hour to get to school. His teachers are so proud of how hard he works in school and how much he is excelling! He has so much confidence and hope for his future that he dreams of being the President of Uganda someday!

As one of ten children, Anthony works as hard at home as he does at school to help out his single mother. Anthony’s father passed away when Anthony was very young, and he has stepped up to take over many household responsibilities. Right now he spends his free time weeding the family fields.

Life for this amazing little boy could have been very different after the death of his father. Without help, Anthony's mother wouldn't be able to send even one of her children to school. All ten children would be trapped in poverty.

Because of YOU, Anthony gets to go to school, eats two hot meals every day, goes to the clinic when he's sick, reads as many books as he wants, and plays with his friends every school day.

Thank you!

Nyaka's 2014 PLE Results

YOU are preparing students for their futures!

Uganda's education system requires every student leaving primary school to take a test before they are allowed to go to secondary or vocational school. Students who score very well are accepted into the best secondary and vocational schools in the country. Students who test poorly may not be accepted into a school at all. Although many of these students are able to find apprenticeships to learn trades, they are more likely than their more educated peers to remain in poverty.

For the second year, Nyaka's students will be attending the Nyaka Vocational Secondary School. (Learn more about the school on its Global Giving project page!) However, this national testing is still a great opportunity to evaluate how well YOUR students are doing compared to other school systems in the region. YOUR students did very well last year compared to students throughout the country. As you can see from 2014's grades on the bar graph, the vast majority of students earned an A+ or B. All of the students passed.

Not surprisingly, when YOUR 56 primary seven students sat for the Mock PLE exams, both primary schools emerged 2nd in their respective sub counties. They are on track to do just as well this year as they did last year!

YOUR students are excelling academically thanks to the supports YOU provide! YOU should be very proud!

Thank YOU!

YOUR students are in school today because of YOU! Thanks to YOU, they have clean water, healthcare, shoes on their feet, food in their bellies, and worlds of opportunity opened to them!

Someday they might be teachers, doctors, engineers, artists, writers, or scientists. One of their ideas could lead to a breakthrough in research, change the way we see the world, or make it a little bit brighter.

Before YOU came along, their ideas and potential would have been muffled by poverty. They wouldn't have the chance to share their gifts with the world.

Thank YOU for giving them the opportunity!

We also wanted to say a special Thank you!

This September, we told you that our Founder and Executive Director, Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, was nominated for the 2015 Waislitz Global Citizen Award. Thanks to YOUR votes and shares, Jackson won!  He was officially named the 2015 Waislitz Global Citizen in front of a crowd of 60,000 people at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City!

Now more people than ever have heard about Nyaka and it's all because of YOU!

This is a big step forward to help more children and grandmothers in Uganda.

Thank you so much for YOUR support! Everything is possible when we work together!

YOU made it possible! THANK YOU!

Shirah in Vancouver!
Shirah in Vancouver!

There's so much great news to share!

14 of YOUR students are off to University this month!

Shirah has already landed in Vancouver and is ready to start classes at Vancouver Island University. She has a great support system of university staff and a host family who will help her be successful.

Shirah's not the only one facing a big change. Most of YOUR students are attending university in Kampala, which is Uganda's biggest city. It's very different from the rolling hills and small villages in southwest Uganda. Most of YOUR brand new university students have only been to Kampala once or twice in their lives. But don’t worry! The excellent education and support YOU have provided all of YOUR students has prepared them to face new challenges. They will rely on the life skills and education YOU have provided them while they learn to navigate their new world in the big city. And, thanks to YOU, Nyaka will be able to give them guidance and support as they grow and learn in University.

If a major milestone wasn't enough, we have more amazing news to share!

Nyaka's Founder and Executive Director, Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, has been nominated for the

Waislitz Global Citizen Award!

This award not only validates the wonderful work YOU make possible, it could also win Nyaka a prize of $100,000 to empower and educate YOUR students and their grandmothers in Uganda!

To win the award and the $100,000 prize for YOUR children, Jackson has to get the most votes!

Will you help by voting for Jackson today?

Meet Ronald! He is a 6-year-old nursery student at Kutamba Primary School. He loves to dance, and you can tell by his adorable smile that he loves to laugh.

Because of YOU, Ronald has everything he needs to succeed. He has free education, books, healthcare, clean water, a school uniform (with shoes!), and now he has one more thing...

He has a secondary school to go to near his home! The Nyaka Vocational Secondary School just celebrated its official opening on July 17th, 2015.

Thanks to help from wonderful supporters like YOU, the school will be fully built and at full capacity years before Ronald will walk through those halls!

We've shared some photos of this wonderful event below. YOU can see more great photos on our Facebook page!

Thank YOU for making a difference for Ronald and all of YOUR students in Uganda.
