HANDS-ON TRAINING ON RANGE OF MOTION (ROM) AND STRETCHING EXERCISES TO PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
Believing that parents play a vital role when it comes to rearing and caring their children, much more if these children have disabilities, without parents’ cooperation the development of a child would be achievable.
June 18, 2010 the Loving Presence Foundation staffs went to the nearby Municipality of Hinatuan, with one mission to bring changed to parents of the disabled children. A HANDS-ON TRAINING ON RANGE OF MOTION (ROM) AND STRETCHING EXERCISES was given to the 30 parents of children with disability. This was purposely conducted, hence, looking into the place and area of Hinatuan Municipality where medical specialists and services are quite limited.
June 18, 2010 of the afternoon Medical Staffs of the Loving Presence Foundation, Incorporated went to the Muncipality of Hinatuan, a day before the training schedule, with only one mission to bring changed to parents of the special children, other Persons’ with Disabilities and some of the Community Based Rehab. Volunteers in the said Municipality.
Speakers were the Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Emelie S. Viola, who gave her expertise on the latest Disability Survey of the PWDs in the Municipality and the Different Types of Disabilities and their Characteristics. Though, most of the participants were parents of PWDs but on their faces seen their astonishment especially when the speaker discussed on the increasing numbers of PWDs in their town. And then, Dr. Renato Jose Villanueva, the only Physiatrist in Caraga Region, shares his expertise on Neurophysiology of Motor Function and Physiology of Joints. Though the entire presentation and terminologists’ used were in English but Dr. Villanueva were able to deliver it to the participants as understandable as possible by using the dialect language and in active-participative discussion. Everybody enjoyed the topic but surely learned so many things.
In the hands-on proper, no one was left on their chair for everybody had been busy also following and performing of the exercises discussed by Physical Therapists. All of the parents were amazed seeing their special children who responded on every exercise they made to their children. Same exercises were conducted on the second day until facilitators were quite confident enough that these participants could perform the proper exercises at home with less supervision of the Physical Therapists.
After the training, parents were very thankful and blessed of the training they attended. A parent said that it was the type of exercise he had been waiting for to be learned for going to PTs will never be possible to them, because there are no Physical Therapists available in their town. Nevertheless, the training conducted would not be a guarantee for the special kids and PWDs to improve their physical condition for it will all lies to how the parents will apply the things he/she learned in the training with of course minimal supervision from the staffs of the RHU and the LPFI. For as long as parents will find time enough to spare their special time to their special kids, then we are confident enough that attaining even the Activities of daily Living of the child will not be impossible. Our special thanks to our donors, organization and the private individuals in Global Giving. Truly you gave us a chance to extend our help to our poor fellowmen specially the Persons with Disabilities.
