Coding is Introduced to Primary Class

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

At EEESMA School for the Deaf, we know well that enhanced computer skills could well lead deaf students into the valuable and productive realm of the virtual workplace. Future opportunities are endless! The school leadership is doing all it can to make gains toward realizing those opportunities.

Last week a local San Miguel de Allende business, Diver Robots who specialize in teaching hearing kids to code, made a presentation to the teachers and students of the primary school class. The EEESMA teachers helped facilitate by interpreting from Spanish to Mexican Sign Language (LSM). As you will see from the photos, the young ones were enthusiastic and, like little sponges, were soaking it all up! Of course, teaching coding to those of a young age only enhances the probability of success.

On March 23rd, a three day workshop will also begin at EEESMA, presented by American non-profit DeafKidsCode.org The workshop will be led by three women, coding professionals, from Southern California who have a wealth of knowledge in teaching coding to school age children/young people. And as the name implies, the children they teach also happen to be Deaf. One of the young women professionals is Deaf herself. How relatable is that?! Think of the great role model she will make for the EEESMA students! This initial workshop will include 14 students who have expressed a desire to learn more about computers and to learn coding in general. Eventually all students will have the opportunity to participate.

It is EEESMA's intention to create a collaboration between Diver Robots, DeafKidsCode.org and a generous volunteer, retired from the software programming profession, currently living in San Miguel de Allende, and who wants to be a part of it all. We know that having these three working together will serve to enhance the project because each has much to share. There will be more to report and more photos to send to you very soon as the next stage of the project unfolds. We will keep you posted.

In the meantime, we encourage you to also play a part in helping to make this exciting project successful. Please join the EEESMA Coding Team by donating generously. As stated on the website, our mission at EEESMA School for the Deaf is to ensure that all San Miguel de Allende children who are Deaf become literate, independent and productive citizen who set and achieve life goals. This is one project that offers great promise in helping to fulfill that mission.
