Donating to this project will help build an ecological demonstration farm in the Indigenous community of Atanquez in Northern Colombian. This demonstration farm will provide practical solutions to pressing concerns of sanitation and clean food production. Furthermore, it will raise awareness in the community towards important sustainability issues such as alternative energy systems, recycling and the valorisation of traditional knowledge.
Years of internal war in Colombia and marginalisation of Indigenous culture have impacted the livelihoods of the community Atanquez. The community is currently facing tremendous challenges in terms of addressing issues of sanitation, clean drinking water, and production of clean food. This project will directly help one family trying to make a difference, and inspire and build capacity in the rest of the community towards more sustainable living.
At the household level this project will provide practical solutions to real sustainability challenges. Bioconstruction techniques will provide ecological living quarters. Integrated water systems will collect rainwater for drinking and irrigation. Innovative agricultural techniques will provide food for the family. And ecological sanitation techniques will provide safe management of household waste.
With a strong educational focus, this project will help to transform habits and sustainability awareness in a community of 7000 people. Through capacity building and access to an open demonstration farm, locals will be exposed to innovative solutions that work. This will catalyse further actions by inspired locals which will help to transform Atanquez into a more sustainable community.
