With very limited resources Parow Inclusive School in Cape Town accommodates the needs of learners with special educational needs. These learners have barriers to learning and require an extra level of support. Parow puts the needs of the learner first and do everything possible to facilitate the learning experience in a way that addresses the child's special needs. Some of children come from very poor backgrounds others are foster children, some from Orphanages and some refugees
The Government decided that learners with special needs should attend mainstream schools but sadly, budget was not made available for facilitators to help children to cope in this environment. Foster children such as Sanele are currently learning on a Gr1/2 level and not able to cope in a Gr 7 classroom. They do not understand the work, end up being bullied, called stupid and often become very unhappy and a disruption in the class.
To accommodate our learners with special needs until they are able to attend a school of skill, we need additional classrooms, desks and chairs, paint, plumbing repairs. 3 classrooms need flooring installed. We will then have the necessary accommodation and resources to provide appropriate education for individual learning needs and most importantly, children with special education needs will be able to learn within their capabilities in a nurturing and supportive environment
Allowing children to learn within their capabilities gives them the chance to develop with confidence and be able to one day make a worthwhile contribution. Children with special needs learn practical tasks at Parow school, like baking and craft making and the fruits of their labor are sold to the community living around the school. The children gain a definite sense of purpose. At age 14, they progress further and gain skills in computers, woodwork, welding, hairdressing or cooking.
