Summary

This project will collect first global data to provide evidence on environmental air pollution dangers in Centre region Cameroon among adolescents and adults with sample size of 9000, then using data to help children living with breathing problems by offering free Ventolin, trash cans, plant trees, and bio-gas for cooking to 3000 poorest affected children and families living with asthma, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, chronic respiratory infections, and NCD's

Challenge

There is lack of national prevalence data on the health effects of environmental pollutants in Cameroon .The impact of climate change on health is indeed alarming, toxic effects of biomass fuel consumption, outdoor pollution, and tobacco smoke. Infants and young children are particularly susceptible to die. Instead of using world data on them, the first ever data collection will be done on children and parents (9000), then provide opportunity to become part of larger solution for child health.

Solution

Collect first ever global data related to child and adult environmental lung health from parents using passive consent through schools (random selection of schools, measuring heights and weight for body mass index, video watching by adolescents, sending data to UK partners for analysis, disseminating results to schools, community, and government, using mobile text application to provide affected children and families with Ventolin, bio gas for cooking, planting trees, trash cans and awareness).

Long-Term Impact

This project will provide first ever global evidence of environmental pollutants dangers to child breathing, and adult lung health in Cameroon, supporting government air pollution health policy from a representative sample of 9000 people. While providing to 3000 affected children and families Ventolin, bio gas, tree planting, and trash cans for healthy and economic well-being, allowing them to rise out of poverty for sustainable behavior change and development at home, school and job site.
