Project #18732

Saving Babies in Southeast Asia

by Global Community Service Foundation

Every year, 1 million babies die from asphyxia right after birth. We want to help end infant mortality by training midwives and birth attendants how to take action within 1 minute of birth. "The Golden Minute" taught by our "Helping Babies Breathe" program will identify how to save babies lives, stimulate breathing and help lower infant mortality across South East Asia. Help us save babies lives by providing this life saving supplies and invaluable training!

Imagine being pregnant with your 7th child but having no living children because all 6 of your previous babies died within minutes of birth. This is a common story in developing countries. Approximately 10% of newborns require some assistance after birth, saving lives with simple procedures. Global Community Service Foundation (GCSF) and HBB are working to save those babies by providing attendants with the training necessary to help babies breathe.

HBB has already been shown to decrease infant mortality in several countries in Africa and in India. For just $30, a traditional birth attendant can receive a re-sterilizable resuscitation bag and suction device. With just one day of training, the traditional birth attendant can be taught to assess the newborn and use the equipment to facilitate breathing as needed. This project will provide that life saving training across South East Asia and work to decrease infant mortality

Long-Term Impact

The HBB curriculum is an evidence-based educational program geared toward teaching neonatal resuscitation techniques in resource-limited areas. In March of 2016, U.S. Master Trainers will teach over 100 birth attendants and medical professionals serving the ethnic population. More importantly, we will train 20 instructors and provide them with teaching equipment and extra resuscitation equipment so that they can continue training birth attendants for the future. GCSF is a proud supporter of HBB.
