With more than 20 percent of children in Portland living in families with incomes at or below 100% of the Federal poverty level, many children don't have the supplies they need for school. Families struggle to put food on the table, let alone provide a backpack and school supplies for their children. We aim to help ease the burden on homeless and at-risk families by providing children with the tools they need to succeed in school. We aim to encourage a desire for lifelong learning.
Our goal is simple: to provide backpacks and school supplies to at-risk and homeless children throughout the Portland area. With the help of our local partners - Portland Homeless Family Solutions, New Avenues for Youth, Neighborhood House, and Native American Youth and Family Center - we aim to serve K-12 students by equipping them with a new backpack and school supplies.
Providing a homeless or at-risk child with a new backpack and school supplies can help boost their self-esteem. It can improve a child's confidence at school, conveys that education is important, encourages a child to stay in school, and says "We believe in you. You can do it." A backpack not only carries books, it carries hope for a better future. The simple act of receiving a new backpack and school supplies can set an at-risk child on the track to lifelong learning.
