Summary

Vimukti Girls School provides free education to 600 poor girls living in the slums of Jaipur, India. We also provide free books, uniforms, meals and subsidized transport facility to all students. Monthly family income of girls is less than US$ 125. School is currently from class KG to class X. We wish to add senior classes (XI & XII) but there are no rooms available at current facility. Since we run in a rented space, we are constructing 6 portable cabins which can be used for senior classes.

Challenge

Jaipur slums suffer from unimaginable socio-economic problems further intensified by continued migration of poor families from rural areas. Living conditions, health & sanitation are at very low levels in the slums which also suffer from extensive social ills as drug abuse and crimes against women. Discrimination against young girls is embedded in the culture and reinforced by poverty. Parents keep them at home watching over siblings or force them to take up low paying tasks for financial help.

Solution

Vimukti Sanstha has identified education & vocational training as the means to empower these girls. Currently the school is up to class X after which either the students drop out or join other low quality schools. We lose a chance to motivate them to work for a better future. Thus we plan to start class XI & XII so that students get a chance to complete school education and then either go for higher education/professional courses or undergo vocational training and secure high paying jobs.

Long-Term Impact

Completion of school education will enable social & economic empowerment of girls living in slums. It will make them financially independent (with better paying jobs rather menial jobs as maid, sweeper) & encourage them to raise their voice against any exploitation by menfolk in their community. It will help prevent child marriage/early marriage of the girls. There are 600 girls in the school & with the additional classrooms, we will be able to increase the strength to 850 in next three years.
