This project aims to dismantle the cultural, social, and economic barriers holding smallholder women farmers (SWF) in rural Kenya from thriving. We will support 500 SWF with agricultural inputs including certified seeds, fertilizer, and agricultural advisory services to help rural women produce enough food to support their families, lift themselves out of poverty, and become community leaders.
Although agriculture is the backbone of the Kenyan economy, smallholder women farmers face a myriad of challenges due to poverty, cultural norms, and the triple burdens of women which often leave them no time to engage in income-generating activities. Furthermore, the existential cultural and gender norms restrict smallholder women farmers' land tenure and property rights. However, access to land rights is essential to acquiring agricultural inputs, modernizing farming, and accessing extension.
The project will provide smallholder women farmers with agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizer, and agricultural advisory or extension services. Access to such resources is fundamental to unlocking women's potential to feed their families and participate in decision-making, and community leadership. We hope to address the root cause of poverty and inequality by tackling the cultural, social, and economic barriers holding women from thriving.
1. Improved agricultural productivity, food security, and household income. 2. Increased gender equality and women's community leadership. 3. Enhanced environmental conservation through diversified income sources. 4. Improved women's land ownership and participation in household decision-making.
