Help Poor Village Children in India to study further to help their Poor Parents

By Alexander Koshy | Manager - Resource Mobilization

The Role of SAMPARC: Having changed the lives of many deprived children and rural community people, particularly women, SAMPARC, A NON-PROFIT MAKING CHARITABLE TRUST, continues its mission through various development programmes. The Vocational Training Centre, functioning from Malavli (near Lonavla, Maharashtra, India) is just one of SAMPARC's various projects aimed at upliftment of poor village children and rural community people in the remote villages of Maharashtra where education is given very little significance.

The Background: At the village level more than 60 % children usually drop out from schools after 4th standard. Whatever brilliant the students may be, it turns out to be of no use to them. First, the farmer parents just do not feel the necessity of further education. Second, they force the students to become bread winners in the early stage itself due to the poor financial condition of the family. These poverty-stricken families are in such a state of affairs that they can not even imagine to continue education of their wards.

The unfortunate children therefore have no other option but to leave their studies to either take up petty jobs or help their farmer parents due to financial crisis at home. Without any scope for further education, their future becomes miserable. In order to help such unfortunate children & youth, SAMPARC had begun this great task of educating these school dropouts and train them in special trades according to their choice.

The Outcome: The centre has now become a place for skill development & social entrepreneurship among youth from nearby 30 villages to fight against poverty, unemployment & social security.

At present there are 138 students doing their training at the VTC. Out of these, 24 students stay at the campus as they hail from the distant villages. For them we provide all facilities. Others come, attend the classes and return to their villages.

Over the last 13 years, 1560 students were trained in various trades and around 900 are already employed with various industries.
