This project will provide clean cook stoves to 2000 poor rural households in Nyeri County of Central Kenya where over 80% of the population use traditional three stone fireplace for cooking which expose them to indoor house pollution, spend a lot of time gathering wood and exerts pressure on local forests leading to forest degradation. We will train entrepreneurs on Envirofit stove marketing and biomass briquette making that reduces wood consumption by over 80% saving lives and environment.
Over 80% of households depend on wood for cooking . Cooking over traditional and inefficient stoves, exposes families (mostly women and children) to pollution and spend hours a day collecting firewood to feed traditional stoves. According to the World Health Organization, the health impact from exposure to indoor air pollution from traditional cooking stoves and open fires causes 3.5 million premature deaths annually. Over harvesting of wood is leading to biodiversity loss and climate change.
The program will introduce Envirofit fuel efficient cook stove to rural households. We will train Enterprenuers who will sustain our program in the Aberdare Forest Ecosystem to reduce deforestation in the area and improve the health and livelihood of communities. Households will buy Envirofit stovesbat subsidised price as incentive for conservation work for sustainability. Mothers will have more time for other domestic work while cooking time will be reduced and general livelihood improved.
Through this program we will reduce respiratory illness and diseases caused by indoor air pollution in women and children and reduce the demand on forest resources by increased fuel efficiency with the clean cook stoves. This will reduce cooking time, save time wasted collecting wood and reduce the risk of women being raped while collecting wood in the forest, reduced forest degradation, biodiversity loss ,and about 4000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions saved and 50 Youth empowered.
