Lack of concern for Biodiversity has led to lack of sustainability in Agriculture.

Youth are encouraged to learn techniques for enhancing biodiversity.

In October and November 2015, the trained Youth are sent to individual farm fields.

Day long stay and discussions with farmers give them the current data.

The Youth explained to farmers about converting farm fields as biodiversity centres.

For, biodiversity means natural ways of increasing soil fertility and controling pest infestations.

VOICE Team has a dream to stop sale of farm fields in Manachanallur block for non agri purposes.

This is possible only by proving that agriculture is still a viable activity for profitability.

Youth cannot be asked to take up spade and work in the farm fields. Some Youth may do it. But, many will not.

So, VOICE Trust is giving trainings to Youth in areas in their comfort zones like making of manures, pest controls etc.,

Such expertise are begining to blossom under Project # 6265 with your help and through GlobalGiving.

60 more Youth have been exposed to Biodiverse Agriculture in a training program on December 28, 2015

Agriculture graduates usually join fertilizers companies with marketing jobs. Often they have to force farmers to buy chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides etc. They know well that such products not only increase expenses for farmers but also lead to ineffectiveness in enhancing soil fertility and controlling pest infestations. Still, they did not know a way out to stop such less healthy and less viable actions.

15 agri personnel visited VOICE Trust during July - September 2015 and VOICE Team shared with them about Nature Farming interventions done from 1995 onwards. They were surprised that we could achieve 1:2.16 ROI (Return on Investment) and 3 of them agreed to join activities for increasing Eco Farming among small farmers. This was confirmed by others including Agriculture Faculty Members.

VOICE Trust has entered into an agreement with like - minded groups for direct marketing of organic vegetables from small farmers to outlets in towns and cities not only for economic gains for resource poor farming communities who are at the point of selling agri lands due to less economic viability but also for salubrious life for consumers who long to eat poison-free food products for their healthy life.

Thanks to supports from friends of earth and well-wishers of VOICE Trust in India, USA, Europe through Global Giving, new opportunities are becoming accessible in the field of nature farming with the help of organic manures and bio-pest repellents and marketing of nature products both for good health and for healthy environment.  Efforts are on to invite youth already trained under Project #. 6265 to join such new ventures.  It will be great success indeed.

Find attached photos taken while giving special sessions for agri personnel both in the forest field and in VOICE Trust office.  We are appelling to friends of earth and well-wishers of VOICE Trust to extend more supports for this project so that state level nature farming interventions can be facilitated by VOICE Trust in all the 32 districs of State of Tamilnadu and the Pondicheery Karikal regions of the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Dear friends, Your small supports can lead us to facilitate big results.  Please donate for Project #. 6265.

Project # 6265:  Biodiverse Agricultural Training to Youth.

Implemented by :  VOICE Trust, Trichy District , Tamil Nadu,  India.

Supported by:Friends from all over the world through Global Giving.

Progress Report for April – June 2015.

Multipronged approaches to bring  youth into agriculture.

21% of the agricultural lands have been sold in the past 3 years for non-agricultural purposes in Trichy District.  Same trend has been in many parts of  State  of Tamil Nadu, India.  Increase in expenses and decreases in yield and loss in economy are some reasons. Now, lack of manpower is another reason.  There are no farmers to operate machines.

For the past 15 years, VOICE Trust is doing agriculture in 18 acres of land under rainfed cultivation system with the help of 9 models of organic manuring and bio pest repellants (See photo of Azolla algae). Azolla can be easily grown by youth in their house surroundings and sold to farmers for nutrient value to the crops (also to control growing of weeds), as fodder for cattle and as nutrient diet for children.   For every one rupee invested,  Indian rupees 2.16 has been earned after deduction of all expenses including wages for farmers which usually they do not include. Now, 320 tons of vegetables per month are being brought under equitable marketing to give better margin to farmers without any middlemen misappropriation.

On April 1, 2015, Project Director of VOICE Trust addressed 359 teachers from rural schools to encourage youth to join agriculture.  Special trainings offered for specific works like gathering of seeds and conducting  of seed efficiency tests, preparation of organic manures and bio pest repellants and value addition to agriculture produce.

If one of you can help, we can fill one agriculture farm with 2 youth to assure profitable incomes for farmers and to provide poison- free food products to all people in the urban/semi urban/ rural communities.

Appeal is made again to Friends of Earth for help.  You can start helping this project by your donation of minimum  $10 USD to maximum any amount. Donate through Global Giving.

On February 3, 2015 VOICE Team made a day long presentation to Young Girls and Boys doing Teacher Training studies at Sri Raja Rajeswari College of Education at Sirugnaur. 66 Youth participated. Power Point Presentation was given on the importance of agriculture and how interest in agriculture is going down and why youth should take up initatives to learn techniques and technologies about ecological farming for saving agriculture which is the life line of all in society.

The Youth were taken round to the nursery garden and different species of trees and plants were shown to them. The ecological benefits and economic returns were explained to them in detail. Many Youth asked for clarifications about sylviculture. They were particularly interested about marketing timber. VOICE Team accepted their wish to market but insisted upon the need to grow trees and plants for enhancing ecological biodiversity which serves as a natural support in pest control through a healthy pest - predator balance.

The vermi compost pits were shown to them and method of vermi culture was explained in detail. The need for recycling farm wastes not only leads to economic gains but also serves as an ecological source of nurient manures. The system with bricks inside the vermi compost pit was accepted as the better option for movement of earth worms.

Shameera Begum has invited VOICE Team to guide her and her family to continue agriculture in 1.5 acre at Pullambadi.
