In our NGO programme of 10 days, we have learned about various aspects, projects taken over by NGO, Voice Trust.
We have visited the farmers' field at purathakudi, thiruvellarai, edhumalai for a survey. We have divided ourselves into three groups and went to the villages. We were guided by the staffs i.e..Arunagiri sir (guided us in practical classes), Pushparaj sir (taught us about "on the field balance"), and Victoria mam (how to analyse results of participatory rural appraisal).
PRA technique was conducted in Purathakudi village. We were guided by Arunagiri sir and Victoria mam. We have drawn the social map of the village, Resource map (find out the availability of resources in a village), Seasonal calendar (when to plant a crop and what is the right time for harvesting), Transect walk. We have also interacted with the village people says Vetri, second-year B.Sc., Agri student.
Great news that villages are inviting Youth trained in biodiverse agriculture to visit them and start the many processes for economic sustainability and ecological well being in life. The first process is organizing Participatory Rural Appraisal(PRA) for involving all in the local community to speak out what was done in the past, what are the difficulties in the present and what all could be done in the future for strengthening bio diverse agriculture. This was done in Thirupanjeeli village twice during July 2018 with help of trained Youth and agriculture students coming to learn in VOICE Trust work villages.
The next process will be seasonality analysis, resource mapping and climate adaptation. Other processes will include seed banking for preserving quality sees, seed treatment for finding out the seed efficiency ratio, pre-season cultivation preparations including ploughing and base manuring especially with neem cakes for protecting the plants from root borne diseases, organic manuring, bio pest repellents, less labour intensive cultivation practices, timely harvesting, value addition and thical marketing with direct linkages between producers and consumers.
Trained Youth need your continued supports for getting tools kit and for records for taking out on investment data and for travel. Till they get local support, VOICE Trust appeals to friends through GlobalGiving for extending help to meet one or more of these needs.
Thanks to help from friends in India, USA, Europe, VOCE Trust is continuing to train youth in Agriculture with focus on integrated farming system approaches. During April - June 2018, 64 young girls and boys were given trainings on climate adaptation and in preparation organic manures and bio pest repellents. (Photos attached)
In project number 6265, we are also involving in encouraging youth to take up activity for supporting resource poor farming communities in villages. Happy to share with you that 48 youth trained in Agriculture have started assisting farming groups with quality seeds, organic manures and bio pest repellents.
These 48 youth are ready to rear livestock for getting raw materials for preparing bio inputs. But, they do not have finance for purchase of livestock. With your support, a new beginning can be given to trained youth to continue Agriculture activity for assisting resource poor farming community in villages.
