Over 60% of India's population lack access to adequate sanitation, increasing health risks from preventable yet deadly diseases. Healthy Goals uses football sessions to engage young people from Kolkata's slum communities in educational games to teach them about health, sanitation, and how to access clean water. Already supported by Cityzens Giving, your donation will help us reach even more young people in Kolkata.
Slum dwellers account for 30% (1.37 million) of the entire population of Kolkata. These people live without adequate basic amenities in overcrowded and overpopulated slums known as bustees. Challenges vary from economic to social segregation, poor health with high mortality due to preventable diseases and unhealthy sanitation practices. Young leaders from these communities will reach out to other children and young people to engage them in the Healthy Goals project.
Healthy Goals seeks to use football sessions and pitch side teaching to educate young people about sanitation, clean water and personal hygiene. Children and young people will take part a 40-week programme, led by young leaders from the local community. Through innovative football games they teach participants how stay fit & healthy through hand washing, and other simple, yet potentially life-saving behaviours.
Healthy Goals will impact the lives of 2,000 young people per year. As a result they will have improved fitness and increased knowledge on how to protect themselves from water-borne diseases, reducing incidences of diarrhoea and other preventable illnesses. A core group of young people will manage and deliver the project, gaining project management experience, skills and qualifications.
We are currently expecting delays in getting funds to this project due to new regulatory requirements that impact GlobalGiving's ability to disburse to organizations in India. GlobalGiving is working hard to address the issue. Donations to this project will be disbursed as quickly as possible.
