August 2012 Report

What has the Village Hopecore School Mobile Clinic accomplished?
As of August 2012 the School Mobile Clinic has completed 50 mobile clinics, served 2,669 patients, and educated 7,780 students on various health topics this year. Each month we treat about 100 cases of malaria, 100 cases of typhoid and distribute 1,000 intestinal worm treatments. The Mobile Clinic has progressed significantly in 2012, focusing on prevention of common illnesses including malaria and intestinal diseases.

This year we have distributed 3,347 mosquito nets and provided water tanks and water treatment solution to several of our partner schools. Mosquito nets and water tanks are essential to prevent disease and these tools are supplemented with comprehensive and engaging health education.

Each partner school has also established a Health Club, with student leaders, to develop and implement health promotion projects at their school. Several schools have planted vegetable gardens to supplement school lunches with more vegetables and others have bought and sold rabbits as an income generating activity. These Health Clubs provide an opportunity for student leadership and promote healthy activities at each school.

How does this impact the community?
Several months after distributing mosquito nets and providing access to clean drinking water, we have seen a significant decrease in the number of children attending the clinic with symptoms of malaria and intestinal disease. Teachers report less absenteeism and parents report fewer visits to the hospital. Improving health increases childhood well-being, strengthens education, and ensures children will be prepared to lead the community in the future.

What’s next?
We are currently pilot testing the use of water tanks at our partner schools and we plan to expand access to clean drinking water to all the schools throughout the year. This process includes working with the school administration  to treat large quantities of water and ensure it does not get contaminated, as well as encouraging the school children to only drink from the treated water tank. We have also hired a teacher to develop age- and culturally- appropriate health education sessions with videos and visual aides to strengthen our health education.

Why does this matter to me?
We appreciate all of the donations and support received through GlobalGiving and look forward to your continued engagement with our School Mobile Clinic. We could not run these programs without you, please know that you are making a significant difference in the lives of these children.

How can I help?
We are always looking for ways to engage children in fun and educational activities. What do you think is an effective and entertaining way to bring health lessons to life in the classroom?
