Young girl attending Mobile Clinic
What has the Village Hopecore School Mobile Clinic accomplished?
From January to October 2011 our School Mobile Clinic has completed 51 mobile clinics, served 4,032 patients, and educated 7,850 students on various health topics. The Mobile Clinic has significantly progressed in the past few months by screening all students for health problems using growth checks and eye examinations. Our Kenyan Community Health Nurse has been supported by visiting physicians and nurses from the United States to strengthen the quality of health care we provide. We have also been able to provide greater follow-up care through our Community Health Workers for children with serious health issues such as diabetes, malaria and respiratory infections. Our health education presentations have become more engaging for students as we started using a generator to use slide shows and videos in the classroom.
How does this impact the community?
We have received innumerable messages of thanks and appreciation from parents and teachers for the free, accessible and quality preventative and curative medical care that we provide. The biggest stressors for parents and barriers to educational attainment are childhood diseases. By providing malaria tests & treatment, typhoid tests & treatment, and antibiotics for respiratory and diarrheal infections, we are able to improve the quality of life for entire families. Additionally, our educational component ensures that the future generation will be educated and prepare to engage in healthy behaviors as they grow and develop.
Recently we have been distributing free mosquito nets to children whose parents attend a malaria education training. By providing mosquito nets we will be able to prevent 50% of malaria cases among young school children. We believe that preventative health care is the most important aspect of public health and we will continue to provide preventative services, including water treatment and nutritional supplements as more funds become available.
Why does this matter to me?
We appreciate all of the donations and support received through GlobalGiving and look forward to your continued engagement with our School Mobile Clinic. We could not run these programs without you, please know that you are making a significant difference in the lives of these children.
How can I help?
We are always looking for ways to engage children in fun and educational activities. What do you think is an effective and entertaining way to bring health lessons to life in the classroom?
