Aflatoun is a program targeted to children and youth, that contains social and financial themes which are focused to prevent discrimination, increase child's self confidence through rights education, harness kid's creativity into social actions that will engage them with the world that surrounds them and promotes a broad and constructive definition of savings: to value their personal objects, to take care of the natural resources, and to save money and learn how to spend it responsibly.

An important area of opportunity in Mexico is the creation of financial culture. Saving is not necessarily a routine or widespread habit. Providing the right training and incentives for planning for the future is one of the paths to escape an otherwise almost certain continuation of poverty. The challenge is to empower these children and families into believing they can improve their economic condition. This is achieved through skills in organization and the right use of resources.

Aflatoun aims to generate confidence of achievable success out-of-poverty by developing these skills in children, as personal understanding and exploration of their own identity, childrens' rights and responsibilities, a broad concept of saving and spending, planning and setting concrete steps towards a personal goal.

Long-Term Impact

Children will have an educational experience that will leave them with positive associations with money and social change. By teaching basic social and financial skills, and providing children with practical experience, Aflatoun will build up their capacity to believe in themselves and their ability to make a difference in their lives and in the lives of people around them.
