To have good health, we need good food. But in many neighborhoods in the nation's capital, nutritious food is often not available. We want to ensure that everyone can eat healthy, local food, so we work to empower people to grow their own. We cultivate new gardeners and spearhead new community food projects and, in so doing, we broaden access to good food for everyone. In the process, we increase the health and resilience of communities, as well as families.
A healthy diet is a diverse diet, rich in the vitamins and minerals which are essential for health. But many people in the city don't have access to those kinds of high quality foods. Too often, grocery stores are far from where people live and the easiest place to find a meal doesn't offer the nutritional value of fresh fruits and vegetables that we all need to lead healthy active lives.
The most effective way to bring fresh vegetables to our community is to empower people to grow their own. We provide the opportunity and welcome everyone to come learn how to grow their own fresh, healthy, local food. We guide our students in season-long, hands-on classes, cultivating the skills and confidence they need to create a thriving garden - even in the middle of the city. We send them home with food in their baskets and confidence in their abilities to grow more.
As we cultivate new gardeners and spearhead new community food projects in the city, we broaden access to good food for everyone, increasing the health and resilience of families and of communities. By learning to grow their own food, Washingtonians can secure their access to safe, affordable, healthy food.
