Challenge

Hundreds of families are in need of quality, affordable housing. Habitat Birmingham will build 40 new homes to sale at zero percent interest to qualifying families. Construction is planned for Spring 2016 on 19 acres in East Lake, former home to an entertainment park called Cascade Plunge, built in the 1920s, that included a lodge, event center and pool that was fed by a natural spring which "cascaded" from a tiered concrete fountain. After years of decline, the property closed in the 1990s.

Solution

Cascade Plunge development will offer quality, affordable housing options to families in need. In addition to revitalizing the residential community, it will positively impact economic development in the commercial and existing businesses in the area. Auburn University Studio drafted the design for the new development, which will include a community amenity that will benefit surrounding residents. Habitat Birmingham is seeking a community partner to work on the community amenity aspect.

Long-Term Impact

The completion of the Cascade Plunge housing development will positively impact the long-term economy in this community and surrounding areas. It offers families an opportunity to achieve homeownership that may not otherwise qualify. Homeownership promotes family stability, self sufficiency, civic responsibility, positive economic impact, neighborhood revitalization, educational achievement, career advancement, strong communities and healthy living environments.
