This project aims to provide young people who otherwise wouldn't have access, opportunities to reach their full potential. It identifies local youths and brings them on to the GVI program for up to 6 months where they receive training, mentorship and work experience. It allows local scholars to experience the work that GVI does, be confronted with global issues on a local scale and become more aware of possibilities and opportunities.

GVI works in 8 different countries and manages 12 different base locations, manned by an array of international staff and volunteers. We partner up with a number of local organisations. But we have had few locals experiencing the work that we do every day. The National Scholarship Program (NSP) aims to address this gap by offering the opportunity for locals to join the project. This leads to better community impact, communication and awareness.

The NSP will provide opportunities for youths in the regions that GVI works, to receive support and training as well exposure to people from all over the world. This will strengthen our projects by having a stronger community connection. It also allows locals to share their culture and local knowledge. The opportunity to join as an intern on a project offers the opportunity of personal long-term growth and could result in full-time employment with GVI or one of our partners.

Long-Term Impact

The long term impact will vary from scholar to scholar. Some of our past scholars have gone on to achieve higher degrees, lead conservation programs, become head rangers and community leaders as well as many joining GVI as permanent staff members. The long term impact on the projects will be better community trust and engagement. We will better understand community needs and adapt the way that we work accordingly.
