Growing Fruits for 17,500 Pupils in Gilgil Schools

Summary

Our project shall provide vital nutritional requirement to poor pupils for boosting their immunity and fighting malnutrition.Most pupils diet contains mainly carbohydrates and lack essential vitamins.From our baseline survey,pupils were found to be measuring less than their equivalent age and suffering from illnesses frequently. This project seek to reverse the trend by introducing fruits in the pupils' diet through growing of fruit trees in their school garden to be managed by the pupils.

Challenge

Gilgil is a dry area that suffer from crop failures frequently that lead to food shortage, which affect school going children more than the other members of the community. Some schools have a feeding program that feed children with maize and beans normally without vitamins.From our baseline survey,pupils were found to be measuring less than their equivalent age and suffering from illnesses frequently.Our project shall provide vital nutritional requirement to poor pupils.

Solution

Perennial fruit trees will be planted as a remedy to harsh weather challenges in the region.The number of fruit trees to be grown per school will depend on the number the school population and species productivity to make sure that all children are able to have a fruit per day. Different fruits will be planted to guarantee enough supply of fruits each season.Innovative water harvesting and irrigation techniques will be employed to ensure the survival of the fruits trees and monitored for 3yrs

Long-Term Impact

By the end of the end of the project period 17,500 pupils will have supply of fruits therefore preventing Malnutrition and associated deficiency conditions.The program target is to reach 25 schools in Gilgil constituency.Average population of the schools is 700 pupils and the total number of children to benefit from fruits for schools program is estimated at 17500 needy children.In the long-run for instance a 10 year old avocado tree can produce 2,500 fruits which will support many pupils.
