In the semi-urban areas of Lagos State, Nigeria, the Girl Child Art Foundation (GCAF) has embarked on an empowering journey, unleashing the potential of young girls through the art of fashion design. With pride and enthusiasm, GCAF shares the remarkable progress made in the last two months with their fashion design training. This vocational skill promises to change the lives of these young beneficiaries.
Eight eager young girls have actively participated in the fashion design training, dedicating two hours a week to honing their creative talents at the GCAF studio space in Bamako Estate, Lagos. The program commenced with the basics, as the girls learned the essential techniques of taking measurements and cutting blouse bodices. Guided by their skilled instructor, they experimented with various neck shapes, shoulder measurements, bust points, and under-bust measurements while mastering the art of creating allowances, including zip allowance, in blouses.
The girls eagerly embraced the opportunity to learn from one another, and they used each other as live models to understand the intricacies of body measurements. Full-length, half-length, sleeve and round sleeve, waist, wrist, shoulder, bust, and hip measurements became second nature to them, fueling their passion for the art of fashion design.
Beyond mastering fashion design skills, the program provided a safe space for these teenage girls, shielding them from potential dangers and predators in their vicinity. The positive impact of the training extended far beyond the art of tailoring. It instilled a newfound sense of confidence and self-esteem in the girls, empowering them to stand tall and independent in a world where women often face workplace harassment and its consequences.
As they delved deeper into the world of fashion design, the girls began envisioning a future where they could create clothes for themselves and the people around them. The spark of creativity ignited within them, and they eagerly anticipated the day they could craft their designs.
The dedication and interest shown by the beneficiaries were awe-inspiring, and the impact of this vocational skill training went far beyond the walls of the GCAF studio. Fifty-five per cent of these girls showcased unwavering commitment, knowing that their newfound skills would change their lives and inspire and empower girls worldwide.
GCAF is immensely grateful for the support and contributions from the community. The financial aid and advisory support have made this dream a reality, allowing the girls to participate in the program at no cost. Donations have facilitated the payment of salaries to skilled instructors, ensuring that the girls receive quality training. The belief in the potential of these young girls has transformed their lives, as they now walk with heads held high, ready to take on the world with their newfound creativity and confidence.
In conclusion, the journey of fashion design at GCAF has proven to be a life-changing experience for these young beneficiaries. As they stitch together dreams and aspirations, they break barriers, defy stereotypes, and embrace a future filled with endless possibilities. The positive impact of this program radiates beyond fashion design; it is a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards a brighter, more empowered generation of girls in Lagos, Nigeria, and beyond.
