Fauquier Wrestling has experienced unprecedented success in the past two years, earning back-to-back 4A State titles. Five wrestlers were State Champions, and many, many more were State placewinners. To continue this success, we need to expand our program to include middle school students and buy the equipment and supplies necessary to support the program. Our first and most important purchase will be a wrestling mat, the most basic piece of equipment in any wrestling program.
This past year, none of the Fauquier County high school wrestling teams was able to field a full lineup, resulting in forfeits in some weight classes due to low participation. A new program, such as a middle school clinic or county-approved middle school wrestling program, will help increase participation by exposing students to wrestling at the middle school level. Other local counties that have middle school wrestling programs are able to field a full high school line-up each year.
This project's goal is to start a program for middle school students in order to introduce them to the sport of wrestling so that they are more likely to continue wrestling in high school. In addition, the project will provide the equipment and supplies necessary to run a wrestling program, most importantly a new wrestling mat. A wrestling mat is the largest, most important purchase made by any wrestling club and is vital to providing a safe environment for wrestling.
Participation in wrestling at the high school level will increase, thereby resulting in full lineups for high school teams during the season, as well as backups at each weight class. In addition, students will experience all of the benefits of wrestling, including self-confidence, discipline, mental toughness, sportsmanship, physical fitness, self-reliance, and respect for others, all while earning good grades: this past season, the average GPA of varsity wrestlers was 3.19.
