Project #5764

Green Education Center for Kenyan Street Children

by Jitegemee

Jitegemee presently educates and feeds 190 street children in Machakos, Kenya, with an 80% rate of them working post-training. We are building a new "green" education center, including a public library, so we can grow our size and services.

Approximately 275,000 Kenyan children are categorized as street children and forced to fulfill their basic needs on the streets. Without some form of basic education and economic training many children turn to theft and prostitution to survive. Jitegemee has helped street children who have shown a dedication to changing their lives and learning the skills to be self-sufficient in adulthood. However, it has outgrown its current facility and must build a new space to continue to expand its reach.

This building project will provide a new environmentally sustainable education center that will become a community hub for learning. The center will provide the community's first public library and computer room, and will also offer classes to parents. To date, Jitegemee has helped to drastically reduce the number of street children in Machakos, but there are still many who can't afford education and training.

Long-Term Impact

The building project will allow Jitegemee to sustain and grow its long-term programs which serve nearly 190 street children and their families annually. Additionally, it will allow Jitegemee to provide new economic opportunities through the tree nursery, farm, and computer classes.
