The Solar Bulb project was officially initiated on the 17th June. A group of us from Green Channel has gone around to different slums in Dhaka, trying to select locations for the implementation of the project, taking many factors into consideration such as how densely packed the slums are, what the roofs of the houses are made up of, whether they already have electricity or not, how much of a demand for light is there in the slum etc.
We ultimately selected Korail slum to begin with. We have begun installation and are simultaneously monitoring the bottle-installed houses to keep ourselves updated with the effectiveness of the technology.
One of the biggest drawbacks right now is the monsoon season in Bangladesh. With not enough sunlight, the bottles don't provide a lot of light, however on sunny days, they seem to provide enough light in a dark room for the residents to do their daily chores. So far we have heard some good comments from he residents.
In the course of next few weeks, we will be covering houses from a few slum areas, and if we hear back good results from the residents, we will further expand the project.
