Step Up Orphan Opportunity Center Step Up provides over 150 vulnerable young people with a quality education, life skills training, psychological support and opportunities for personal growth. Our mission is to help every child to learn and develop as a person, overcoming the negative inheritance of an institutional past.
Many orphans who graduate from 'correctional orphanages' have received 9 years of education that equate to just 5 years of general school. Most are capable of completing high school, and many could go on to university. But no one gives these young men and women the opportunities taken for granted by their peers. Lack of life skills and difficulty finding a job complicates their situation even further.
Step Up operates as an evening school (many of our students work during the day) where we teach a varied curriculum, prepare students for 9th grade exams and to get the high school diploma, provide career advice and help with finding jobs. Step Up is a unique community of students, teachers, and volunteers built on healthy relationships, trust and respect.
Step Up gives orphan leavers, who often end up on the margins of society, the opportunity to get a quality education and a career that will positively impact their lives. Students leave the program with increased confidence and tangible life skills that will help them to become self-sufficient and active members of society.
