Summary

She is a young woman from rural India with big dreams to help her family and farming community. But she faces multiple barriers. With access to learning, however, she can drive change in her community. Six such aspiring women changemakers will be empowered to introduce new ideas and catalyse change in the lives of 3000 women farmers in southern India. They will be equipped with smart projectors and skills to run sustainable enterprises showing farmer-training videos on natural farming practices.

Challenge

Young women in rural India are constrained by limited access to knowledge and economic opportunities. At the same time, women food producers, who have been hit hard by climate change and COVID-19, need information on resilient natural farming practices. Unless strong efforts are urgently made to empower aspiring young women and marginalised women food producers to fully participate in rural transformation, it will be difficult to lift them out of poverty and achieve the "zero hunger" goal.

Solution

Young rural women from southern India will be invited to submit innovative business proposals around the screening of Access Agriculture farmer-training videos on natural farming practices to improve the lives of 3000 vulnerable women farmers. Six entrepreneurs will be selected, and each of these winners will receive a solar-powered smart projector containing the library of training videos. Their knowledge and entrepreneurial skills will be enhanced through a coaching programme over 2 years.

Long-Term Impact

Through this project, we anticipate the growth of a network of empowered young women entrepreneurs in rural southern India. They will not only provide for themselves and their families but will also bring to the local women farmers, a wealth of new ideas from around the world to improve their lives. This will contribute to the transformation of the food system in the local communities, leading to healthier diets, sustainable livelihoods and a reduction of agriculture's environmental impact.
