The objective of our project is to develop story books in mother tongue which are suited for age group 5 to 10 years targeting their development of mental, emotional, and creative part of the young children. Our first task is to develop a frame work to develop stories in mother tongue and try to weave stories in young minds of our nation and broaden their thinking by inculcating good reading habits from a tender age. About 31% of the world's multidimensional poor children live in India. The child one lacks at least one-third of ten indicators grouped into three dimensions poverty; health, education and standard of living. For these children, learning beyond textbook is a luxury. Poor infrastructure, untrained teachers, and out dated text books are creating wall around them. We have grown up on stories narrated to us by our grand parents and other elders in our family. They were good old days when we would lie besides our ajies, azoba daadi, nani as they took us fantasy journeys with their tales. The wit of Birbal, righteous of the pandavas, the stories of Vikram and Betaal et. Al. Our objective is to take literacy to students living in under privileged communities with the help of stories, colourful illustration, and engaged activities.
In the context of schools and school education, there are some key challenges particularly in contemporary social contexts that acquire the sense of urgency which need to be addressed to. An attempt has been made to present a brief discussion of why we need to come up with new ways of educating students to allow them to better situate themselves when confronted by the socio-cultural complexities and the role of values in meeting the challenges.
