How we meet Brian
Two years ago, sports for Change was approached by a woman who desperately needed help to save her son. At 15 months, her son Brian was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease which needed urgent surgery. His mother, who is single and job-less had given up looking for funds. She had no hope of raising 5000 USD quoted by a local hospital for operation. Hers was a story of desperation.
Sports for Change members came with an idea. As runners, they decided to sweat to save the baby’s life.
Running to save Baby Brian’s life
The choice was Lewa marathon 2010. A race rated as one of the hardest in the world. One of them won a banner that read "running to save baby Brian's life". This attracted alot of attention. And afterwards support. The cause was supported hugely by various people from all walks of life. Safaricom LTD played a major role. They referred us to Mater hospital which treats kids with heart related cases at low cost. After several x-rays an operation was scheduled. Within a month after the race, Brian was operated and released.
“Seeing Brian recuperating in hospital bed was a moment beyond words, a moment that will linger in my mind forever.” Says Shiku Waithaka
