Give Hope to 20 Single Young Mothers in Tanzania

by Ilula Orphan Program

Ilula Orphan Program aims at helping Single Young Mothers gain necessary skills to get the lost hope after being the victims of early pregnancy. The program that focuses on Single Young Mothers will remove the challenges faced by the single mothers who acquired their motherhood at teen-age and were abandoned by their family members and their partners.

The Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey and Malaria Indicator Survey 2015-2016 report, shows that 27% of women aged 15-19 have begun childbearing. Teenage pregnancy and motherhood are common in rural (33%) areas and from low income families. It is also reported that ONLY 18% of young women are married, while the majority are single. Most of them suffer from social exclusion, stigma, violence, low self esteem, inequality and discrimination. IOP intents to help them overcome the challenges

Single Young Mothers will be trained in different aspects such as self management/Life Skills Education, entrepreneurship, reproductive health rights, child care and business development and management. After involvement in various trainings, the young mothers will gain confidence, be safe and secure, gain social and economic skills and knowledge, get an income through micro loans from their own micro finance groups and increase economical independence.

Long-Term Impact

IOP would like to help Single Young Mothers realize their goals and future as they struggle to overcome the challenges they face in their environment in the course of improving their livelihood. Behavioral and socio-economic challenges faced by Single Young Mothers will be given an avenue to go away when they get enrolled at the Ilula Single Young Mothers Empowerment Center. They will help other single young mothers to restore their lost hope through socio-economic activities and opportunities.
