Aid 1,000 Vulnerable Households in Kanungu is a youth led initiative by Tree Uganda Academy (TUA) to mobilize rural farmers from 1,000 drought affected households in Kanungu into Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), enhanced with seed funding to provide access to financing by rural farmers most susceptible to prolonged droughts to increase their ability to adopt better farming methods and withstand the drought resultant shocks and stresses and to offer Agricultural Sustainability.
The Frequent prolonged droughts every year have greatly and increasingly affected local farmers in agriculture with a resultant increase in poverty levels to the people of Kanungu. This has a negative impact on the net output per acreage and affects both local and international markets, food security, Gross Domestic Product, and the net income of the farmer. Children from these poor households do not access better education and face malnutrition.
The project will ease access to financing and trainings by the local farmers (under the VSLA arrangement), thereby increasing their ability to adopt better farming methods, better Post harvest handling methods, diversify their economy and withstand the economic shocks and stresses as a result of prolonged droughts. With access to financing, farmers from the affected areas of Kanungu will be able to buy Solar irrigation Kits and other inputs, increase production and send their children to school.
Revitalization of Agriculture at household level. The VSLA is a perpetual and an easily replicable model and will offer Agricultural sustainability benefits through sustainable access to financing due to increased savings by members, skills acquisition through trainings offered at group level, and better governance since the groups will be community led and owned under the stewardship of Tree Uganda Academy.
