I hope all is well with you. We are proud to have launched our Food and Fruit Appeal for 2016 which will be raising money for our daily food and fruit programs in Honduras. Each year we aim to spend over $30,000 on food and fruit programs across Latin America so the more we can raise this Thanksgiving the more we can guarantee in 2016.
For every $40 donated one child will receive their daily food and fruit for the school year and we will also plant a fruit tree to help sustain the program for years to come in their own homes. To put this into perspective around 50% of wasted food in the Western world comes from the home with households throwing out hundreds of millions of tons of food and drink each year. Domestic food waste can cost the average household around $1,000 a year – we could feed 25 children and plant 25 fruit trees to sustain the program for that amount!
This year our food and fruit program that you have kindly donated towards in the past has had such an impact on the children with their BMI’s gradually rising from alarming and dangerous levels. Whilst still in the bottom percentiles, each year we are improving the situation with your help.
It would be so great to be able to guarantee our Food and Fruit program for 2016 so anything you can donate this Thanksgiving to this page would be gratefully received – and not a crumb wasted!
A very busy few months in Honduras. As well as traditional dancing to celebrate Independence Day and Day of the Child our Phoenix College students have been busy. As part of their course we have integrated a lot of community service programs.
We continue with our program of teachers' assistants in the primary school (with students from our Phoenix College) whom we pay and also cover their future Univiersity costs, which they will start next year.
This year’s Annual Appeal is dedicated to our daily food and fruit program with the aim to provide now and sustainably in the future: how? For every $25 donated to this page one child will receive the daily food and fruit we provide each year and we will also plant a fruit tree which will continue giving in the future. Many thanks for your donations in advance and together we can sustain daily food for the children.
On Wednesday July 15th, Global Giving will match donations made through this page up to $1,000 per donor based on the organization’s Partner Rewards level: as we are Superstars we get 50% extra per donation, whilst available funds last!. There is $115,000 available in matching funds and GlobalGiving are offering a $1,000 bonus award for the project with most individual donors and a $1,000 bonus award for the most money raised. Matching begins at 9:00:01 EDT and lasts until funds run out or 23:59:59 EDT.
Your donations allow us to continue to provide primary, secondary and college education here in Honduras.Recent exam results have been excellent in both the primary school and the Phoenix College. Plan Tilapia is ready for harvesting with all our teachers and assistants enjoying the first catch. Moving forwards, we plan to start a sustainable plan involving chickens which will provide essential income to the local families as well as help cover some school costs in the future.
Thank you for your support thus far and thank you now for helping us build a better future.
As part of the Fly The Phoenix Seven Continent Charity Challenge on Saturday 6th June, the communities themselves will be undertaking events to raise awareness and funds. In Honduras our local teachers, students and families will be hiking to the nine communities who currently send students to our Phoenix College. Please sponsor the communities as we strive to move towards sustainability over the next few years by donating to this page.
School government elections were held whereby the students vote for their fellow students to form a collective body - lots of fun though the swearing-in ceremony was a serious affair! Mother's Day was celebrated and one of our sustainable plans, Plan Tilapia (fish) is showing brilliant signs of progress with the first harvest due in June. Our teachers' assistants are doing brilliant work in the classes; they are current Phoenix College students who we pay to come in the morning to help out in the primary school - we also help them with their university costs.
Thank you all for your support and please do sponsor the community as they take on their hike on 6th June. Cheers
Our schools in San Rafael are back up and running for 2015 with new faces and new teachers! We now employ six teachers in our secondary school and college from which the students will graduate in Rural Social Sustainable Enterprise. We have also taken on six teachers' assistants to help out in the primary school. They are all students from our college and in return for their work, we pay them a monthly stipend and will help cover their future University costs. Sustainable income plans are coming along well, with the introduction of Plan Tilapia (fish-farming). Plan Café produced a great crop late in 2014 helping to cover some of our college costs. We have also restarted our daily food program which along with daily fruit aims to give the children at least one decent meal a day.
Thank you to all our donors who continually help to make this happen and who will make this happen in the future. Remember that on 6th June we are undertaking The Phoenix Seven Continent Charity Challenge, where you can undertake any fundraising event at home, knowing that fundraisers are being held on the same day around the world. Please do get involved and use this page as your fundraising page - every cent counts!. For more information click here.
