K.I.D.S.' G.I.R.L.S. Program in Action--the Power of Sports and Play

On April 18th, K.I.D.S. partnered with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation ballpark (the first of two in Bridgeport, Connecticut) opened to much excitement from the members of the community.  A beautiful, first-class, state-of-the-art field with a walking track around the facility, it will host Little League baseball and high school sports teams including youth soccer and lacrosse.

Celebrating front and center were the young ladies who played for Bassick High School’s softball team, who took their places in a crowd of mostly male fans.  They all expressed a little sadness that there were so few girls on the field, especially because for them, being involved in sports gave them a sense of pride and confidence.

“Having programs and promote being positive about yourself and others is so important, especially for girls our age,” one team-mate said.

They agreed that initiatives for girls to bond, stay focused on their future and “avoid the negativity” that can be a part of growing up female was an important message.  “For us, sports is a way to get to know who you are on the inside, and what you are capable of accomplishing,” they said.

For at least for one of Bassick’s finest, the day wasn’t just about getting a great place to play softball – it was about getting inspired.  “Every time we play here, we’re going to remember that someone who didn’t have to cared enough to give something back to the community,” she smiled, adding, “Some day, maybe that will be me.”

For years, K.I.D.S. has made healthy living a part of our message to our local partners and recipients. This year, we are also promoting the benefits of daily exercises, outdoor time and family time. During the summer months, K.I.D.S. is spreading the message that children should get outand play and spend time with their families, instead of more time in front of the computer and/or television screen. Through the opening of this Ball Park, and K.I.D.S.’ donations of toys and puzzles we are hoping that children in CT, as well as all children served throughout the U.S., will do just that.
