By 22nd November 2024, another cohort of girls will be transitioning from WISER having completed their secondary school exams. These 52 girls, like any girl who join WISER are unique. They are girls who not only come from low income families but have attended primary schools with inadequate infrastructure and facilities. Joining WISER has opened for them possibilities that most rural girls in Kenya do not have.
The two university-quality science laboratories and well equipped computer laboratory have allowed the girls to access hands-on learning. In addition, experiential learning opportunities such as participating in engineering, mathematics and computer clubs and competitions against other schools in the Science and Engineering have enhanced their STEM skills helping them overcome traditional barriers to STEM career pathways. The girls are able to design solutions to community identified problems and in the process build their self-esteem and overall agency.
WISER girls have taken lead in STEM in the region changing the narrative that this is a field that only boys can excel. With 47% of the WISER girls, transitioning to undertake STEM courses at the University and tertiary level, WISER has the highest number of educated girls pursuing STEM career pathways in the area. This cohort of female educated leaders has changed the trajectory of a patriarchal society, demonstrating that given opportunities women have the capacity to be change makers and pacesetters in their community. This has contributed greatly in addressing power dynamics that favor men over women.
As we celebrate the achievements, we are cognizant that STEM education requires continuous investment due to the changing global trends. Therefore, every donation ensures that we have the right facilities and equipment to educate and empower the girls to fit into the current job market which is technology driven, transforming not only their future but that of their families. Your investment is for life. Thank you!
