Light in Our Home, a Global Grassroots sponsored project, will offer training on the causes and consequences of gender-based violence and reduce oppression of women and girls in rural Rwanda

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

This community initiated project, created and led by a team of 9 local women, addresses the problem of sexual violence in the Ruhango and Byimana sectors. Poor women and survivors of the genocide, who are often economically dependent, are particularly vulnerable to the threat of violence. Sexual violence has also grown in the primary and secondary schools, where students and teachers need a solid education around gender violence and the resources available for its victims.

How will this project solve this problem?

The project will conduct trainings with over 19 district authorities, 590 sector authorities, 533 neighborhood leaders and the general population they serve. After completion of trainings, the team will put in place anti-violence clubs in villages.

Potential Long Term Impact

Over the course of the year, the number of gender violence cases is estimated to decrease from 1 in 2 to 1 in 4 community women who are victimized. In this time, the percentage of guilty men punished for violence will increase to 40%.
