Carnivals and Experiments

Universal Children’s Day 2015:

This year on the Universal Children’s Day 2015, thousands of volunteers of Volunteer for Bangladesh, the youth wing of JAAGO Foundation participated in our Universal Children’s Day campaign to advocate children’s education rights. Supporting UN’s main Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), GOAL4: ‘Quality Education 4 All’, the day long campaign was carried out. On this day our volunteers stepped into the shoes of street children while they can enjoy a day full of fun. The volunteers had spread the message of quality education for a better life among the Bangladeshi masses. The street children were taken to carnivals and various amusement parks to live a day from the childhood they never had. Volunteers took the street kids to the carnival so that they could enjoy to the fullest.

The carnivals were placed in 32 districts across Bangladesh, where volunteers brought the street kids from all the traffic signal points to the carnival. Then the kids had breakfast and wore new clothes of yellow. After that, all the kids went through a thorough medical checkup. Later the children had fun where they got to see the bioscope, hop on to Nagordola, ride on the Merry Go Round and many other fun-filled rides. With more to their entertainment, they watched amusing puppet shows, educational cartoons and theatrical performances. Furthermore, the kids got a chance to draw their colorful dreams on t-shirts. On top of that, kids participated in various sports and fashion shows. Afterwards, children had their lunch and continued their fun again till the afternoon. Overall, it was a day fully dedicated to all the children around us. Heartiest thanks to all our supporters who made the day successful.

JAAGO Online Schools: 5 New Schools Launched in December 2014

The JAAGO Foundation has successfully inaugurated 5 new online schools in the month of December 2014. After the remarkable success of our online schooling program which was initiated in 2011 with our Gazipur branch; the JAAGO foundation now has 10 existing online schools nationwide. The online schooling program was introduced as a solution to the lack of educators outside the major cities to provide students with the JAAGO standard of education. These five new schools have been established in Rangpur, Dinajpur, Teknaf, Habiganj and Laxsmipur. The school in Teknaf is located towards the end of Bangladesh, along the borders where there are no options for schooling. In Habiganj the school is situated in a tea estate to cater to the education needs of the children of the workers who are mostly of tribal ethnicity. Like the motive behind every JAAGO online school these too where established in order to facilitate the locals in remote areas of the country with quality education. 40 children were taken in as the first batch for each of these schools.

New bags New Hope

There is something about a new school bag at the start of the academic year. It is an instant boost of enthusiasm to give one’s best and ace those courses! For a JAAGO student who lives a life that seldom can offer such simple luxury; a brand new school bag is a bundle of hopes and dreams. Courtesy of KrisEnergyall JAAGO students now own school bags that they bring to school.

Treehouse for JAAGO

Dhaka Tribune, apopular local English daily has taken the initiative to provide students of the JAAGO Foundation with their weekly supplement. “Treehouse” is a fun way to introduce young minds to a diverse range of topics. The weekly contains a commendable range of pictures, rhymes, puzzles, comics, drawing and articles that could capture a child’s attention. The habit of newspaper reading also is an effective way to enhance the students’ command over English. We appreciate Dhaka Tribune’s partnership with JAAGO in ensuring the development of reading habits outside school material.

21ST February: International Mother’s Language Day observed

The JAAGO Foundation has always firmly believed in inculcating a deep sense of nationalism amongst its students. A thorough knowledge of Bangladesh’s history is an essential part of JAAGO’s schooling program. That kept in mind, like every year International Mother’s Language Day was observed nationwide in all the 13 JAAGO schools. The students paid their respects to the national flag. A session of paying their tributes to the language martyrs with flowers at the “ShaheedMinar” was conducted within the school premises. The traditional “Ekushey” book fair was organized and every student went back home with a handful of good reads! An art competition was also organized to stir the students’ imaginations in depicting the series of events that took place in 1952.

Playing with Mud
Playing with Mud

Playing with Mud:

Last when did you had fun with as silly as playing with the mud? But our JAAGO kids did by soaking in mud when we arranged a daylong session of “Play and Learn with Mud” activity for our students .Because “Learning is fun, learning is creativity” and this was aimed to build imagination, creativity among the children and to teach the children about the fun of togetherness.  Kids spent the entire day making and experimenting with the plethora of things made out of mud. This not only stretched their creative boundaries but also gave them a great learning experience, while appreciating the traditional art of ‘pottery’ in Bangladesh. It’s okay to get dirty sometime and have fun in the way you want to explore your imaginative mind and we at JAAGO gave our students such opportunity to sneak into their playful mind.

Literacy Week 2014:

Literacy is a spark that illuminates the darkness of mind and brings forth a new world to explore. Every child is entitled to enjoy this spark and roam in the numerous branches of knowledge and creativity. Promising a brighter future for the students of JAAGO, the ‘International Literacy Week’ was celebrated from 7th Sep 2014 - 11th Sep 2014 in all the school branches of JAAGO. The students of our school actively engaged themselves in various activities. The main highlights of the event were poster presentation, essay competition by the students where they expressed their mind and innocuous remarks on what they feel literacy means for them. A reading competition for the students was arranged by Aga Khan School at their premise. Our little student’s narrated stories; poems in the reading competition .The whole celebration of literacy week brought much enthusiasm amongst our students and stirred interest towards their academic learning.

In-House Phonics Training

A two day training session on Phonics as a teaching method was undertaken as many newly recruited teachers were unfamiliar with the use of Phonetics in English language teaching. The objective of this training was to make a better understanding on phonics and its usage in classroom for both new and existing teachers .The training started by a discussion by Ms Sadia Zahid about the sounds of English language and how phonics can be more effective than the traditional method for teachers in teaching English to their   student. In the second phase of the training Ms Marufa Islam and Ms Sadia Zahid collaboratively illustrated some useful techniques of using phonetics and the likely problems the teacher and students may encounter while using it. Some suggestions were also given that may come handy in dealing with those problem. Both sessions were attended by all on-line teachers and some members of the Research and Development team. They found the training very effective.

Universal Children’s Day 2014:

The United Nations call “Universal Children’s Day” is annually celebrated by JAAGO Foundation, and this year was no different. On 20th November, 12000 volunteers of JAAGO Foundation took 4000 street children on a mission to make that day the most memorable day of their lives. And the day was celebrated in 28 districts of Bangladesh.

The ‘Carnival’ started by providing the children with a delicious yet nutritious meal to give the day a healthy start, moving on to have a basic medical check-up afterwards by trained medical professionals. Then the children were taken through the fun events kept in store for them one at a time. These included amusement rides, puppet shows, Bioscope, and sports. The children were also entertained by stand-up comedians as well as were inspired by speeches made by others. The children, who are normally busy earning a living for themselves, had a well-deserved break from their harsh reality.

Apart from this, throughout the day JAAGO representatives pour in to the streets and raise awareness regarding Child Rights with special focus on Education.
