Sona Community School and College is a model of change in a district (Ghotki, Sindh, Pakistan) which is considered as least developed (HDI, Per Capita Income) in entire Pakistan. Marred by tribal traditions, illiteracy, poverty and ignorance, education has remained a distant dream for boys, and for girls it is nothing short of a far cry. The institute, established in 2006 has changed this through a decade of mobilization and awareness in community. At present, it has 500 students (217 girls).
"You educate a man, you educate a man. Your educate a women, you educate a generation". Brigham Young words almost two centuries ago reminds us that a society denying education to women is infact denying life to its future generation. The institute in its decade long existence has made the impact by bringing 217 girls to school for modern education. The continuation of this is empirical in guarenteeing that the seeds sown for this change in society blossom into a tree of hope and prosperity.
The community school and college being operational since a decade has till now enrolled 500 girls, with 217 actively engaged at present. Each girl in fact represent a family that has been reached and changed through the gift of education. The mobilization, awareness session, community linkage has already made people aware of the role women can play through education, and being the flag bearer of this message for Mirpur Mathelo girls, it is vital that it stays, flourishes and expands in future.
