Send an NYC Child to a Free Environmental Camp

by More Gardens Fund

This free green camp makes sure that low-income city children have our community garden gates wide open throughout the summer. In a summer that for many would have been spent indoors behind video screens or in big impersonal programs, they will instead discover the wonders of nature while nurturing their creativity in a 4:1 ratio with experienced permaculture designers, herbalists, artists, gardeners and educators. We are grateful for you partnering with us to help be the change we with to see.

Our children and their families who join our free summer camp live in Lower East Side, NYC that has one of the highest rates of asthma and diabetes in the country. Our neighborhood also includes families of low-income new immigrants who work long hours without places for their children to connect to nature or to their neighbors. Our campers understand the impact of pollution and environmental destruction firsthand, as well as the need to have healthy outdoor experiences for their wellbeing.

We provide environmental education and creative play for children from working families. We give free tuition, use of camp equipment, free organic lunches and snacks, and transportation included for trips to botanical gardens and urban farms. Children immerse in nature, have wholesome physical experiences, learn community building skills, nature awareness, creative expression and farming skills. Children grow and harvest their own vegetables and medicinal herbs and learn healthy eating.

Long-Term Impact

25 children and their families are empowered to become the next generation of environmental leaders by fostering a deep love of the outdoors and learning about urban farming and gardening. The camp employs a community designed program that encourages personal confidence, leadership, social and environmental skills through outdoor play, gardening skills, creative expression and adventure games. Children are healthier, developing healthy eating habits and cultivating active play.
