Many children in rural villages of Srebrenica are deprived of their basic right, i.e. education. Due to lack of transport, bad bumpy roads, narrow streets, long and cold winters many children are forced to leave school because they are unable to come to the school or they have to walk at least three hours before they even reach it. Therefore, IFS-EMMAUS has constructed an educational centre where we offer accommodation, food, support and educational input currently to 60 children.
Srebrenica, even after 20 years from the war, is still undeveloped place that has people living in distant rural areas, villages, where agriculture is the only source of income and where the roads are so damaged or cut off that the population is unable to go to work or school or they use paths through woods that are dangerous and some are even covered with mines. Many children, especially during winter are forced to stay at home or drop school because of this situation.
IFS-EMMAUS constructed an educational centre in Potocari very close to primary and elementary school in order to offer accommodation to children from rural areas of Srebrenica. Having this option, children don't have to drop school or stay at home during winter or even worse put life at risk to go to school. During the stay in the Centre Emmaus they have: accommodation from Monday to Friday, three meals per day, and assistance during studying and organized field trips.
By offering accommodation and possibility for education, 60 children will have the opportunity to continue education, grow as individuals, open horizons, see the world while without this Centre they will have to drop school, turn to agriculture and hard life. Since many young people leave B&H in order to find better jobs outside its borders that same destiny will wait for these children if we don't give them the possibility to educate themselves and create businesses inside B&H.
