In Rumdoul (southern Cambodia), most adults migrate out for many months, to find work; this causes huge health (AIDS etc.) and social problems. Instead, we show them how to grow vegetables all year round. For 100 m2 they invest just 40$ and HARVEST EVERY MONTH 50$. They can stay in their village, with children and family.
Vegetable are grown in only a few places: 1)lack of good seeds 2)the heavy rains and pests destroy the crops. As a result there is a huge migration of adults to the city for 6 months every year. This creates much distress in the villages.
We provide training, good seeds, and subsidize a protection net. Result: no pests, we can grow vegetables even during the heavy monsoon rains. At harvest the "pilot farmers" explain to the other villagers, how they do it. The return on investment is more than 100% after 1 month. On average, for each pilot farmer, at least 3 more farmers follow the same model.
The farmers no longer migrate to the city for work, the local economy develops as they have employment and income all year round. We hope that ultimately more than 200 farmers will join. The nutrition in the villages improves as more quality vegetables are grown. It is expected that vegetable gardens will generate 30-40.000$ additional income in the district.
