Challenge

After the brutal Russian invasion into Ukraine, around 600,000 thousands civilians fled to neighboring countries. Among them 65,000 fled to the neighboring Republic of Moldova through four entry points; mainly from Otaci and Palanka. Around 16,000 of them sought shelter around the cities of Comrat, the capital of the Gagauzian region, as well as Ceadir-Lunga. The population of the city is 50,000, so almost one third are outnumbered by refugees seeking shelter and assistance in the region.

Solution

International Blue Crescent Relief & Development Foundation (IBC) provides food parcels, shelter items & cash for refugee families identified by IBC Moldova team with local emergency response team and authorities. One food parcel can feed up to 6 people for 2 weeks, shelter items go to refugee-hosting families & accommodation centers. By identifying vulnerable people with the locals, we target distribution effectively & decrease people's risk for hunger, freezing, & competition for resources.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide bi-weekly food parcels/plastic dining sets and shelter items of mattresses and blankets to 500 Ukrainian refugee families. On the other hand, 100 families will be given cash assistance to cover essential needs as they make their way traveling through the region and onto their next destination in Europe. Through emergency assistance, burden on host families is reduced, refugees' urgent nutrition needs are met, and by providing cash- families will avoid bad ways of coping.
