During the National COVID-19 Lockdown, Fight with Insight has developed innovative ways to continue to provide Fitness, Food and Educational support to inner city children and their families. These include the provision of weekly health screenings, nutritionally-rich whole food boxes and a peer-led fitness support programme - which are all critical in children's healthy development. Our next priority is to promote children's continued access to education during Lockdown, with data and devices.
The National Lockdown due to COVID-19 has highlighted how online accessibility has become a basic human need, which is intrinsically linked to children's access to education - a basic human right. Without data and devices, many children in the inner city of Johannesburg have had no access to the educational resources needed for them to keep up with their peers, resulting in increasing socio-economic divides that perpetuate poverty.
Fight with Insight has continued to run programmes that provide essential health and food services to children during the National Lockdown. This has provided a platform for ongoing engagement around the challenges for these children, the most prominent being that of access to education. Through partnerships with local schools and service providers FWI is able to support children's access to education, but data and mobile devices are required to facilitate this.
Children are currently experiencing an immense amount of anxiety, specifically related to their schooling. This is especially prevalent amongst children completing their final year of school (Matric). Assisting these children in gaining access to the necessary educational resources will alleviate this anxiety, and reduce the gaps in learning that will have a long-term effect on their educational outcomes.
