Summer brings greater need

By Barbara Howell | CEO

Each year when school gets out for the summer, Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC) sees an increase in need.  I never understood this until I realized it had to do with the subsidized lunch programs in the schools.

This program wasn't around when I was a child, so I was unaware of it.  Over time, the program expanded from just lunch to including breakfast.  This is a wonderful gift for parents struggling to make ends meet.  But come Summer Break, it puts strain on the family budget.  Thier capacity to put food on the table doesn't increase just because school is out.

So, in the summer, BTAC tries to increase the amounts and types of foods provided to low-income families by adding a few extra, kid-friendly items to each month's grocery order.  Whether it is more PB&J, Mac & Cheese, or even fresh fruits and vegetables, it makes a difference.

This sounds fairly simple. However, in the summer, BTAC's donations of food often slow down.  That's where your donations really help.  We are able to purchase more healthful items, fruits and veggies and fill in the gaps, when we run short.

I like to think that, together, we are able to help parents enjoy the summer a little bit more, because they don't have to worry how they will keep thier children fed.

Thank you for helping make this possible.  We couldn't do it without you.
