Each day, Burbank Temporary Aid Center distrbutes sack lunches for the homeless. This past year has been especially challenging, with the growing number of homeless, as well as fewer donations of sack lunches. Often, the sack lunch will be the person's only meal of the day and we try to fill it with healthful and filling items.
Not long ago, the local Salvation Army stopped serving meals for the homeless and referred all of the homeless to our facility. This put a strain on our already limited resources. But I remember the panic in thier eyes and voice, when they arrived at BTAC, worried that they might not be able to get anything to eat. And then the gratitude, knowing they wouldn't go hungry.
As our economy has worsened, the number of those asking for lunches has increased. Many are newly homeless, and are floundering as they try to navigate thier way through the "system." For many, the lunch represents much more than a meal. The caring human contact and kindness offered by our staff and volunteers goes a long way.
Thanks to your donations, we've not had to turn anyone away. BTAC has been able to purchase food to make or supplement sack lunches for almost 400 homeless men, women and families.
