Summary

The Coronavirus crisis is intensifying the poverty of some communities of Bogota and its surroundings. In order to allow them to access goods for their health and organic produce, we aim to distribute food baskets in vulnerable areas of the city. These baskets will provide sufficient food to meet the needs of 3 people during 2 weeks. They will include agroecological fruits, vegetables and beans from our local producers' network.

Challenge

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Colombian government has declared the state of emergency and the obligatory confinement in the entire country during a long period. Since the 25th of March, Colombians have stayed home. However, 46,6% of Colombian population are informal workers, selling food or other products in the street, and suffer now from unemployment. Colombia has to choose between protecting the population from the virus or from hunger.

Solution

In vulnerable neighborhoods, Colombian people face a dilemma: if they leave their home, they may be exposed to the virus whereas if they stay home, they will not be able to earn money and will suffer from hunger. PSF is distributing food aids to these people. By giving them access to essentials, the families will be encouraged to stay home, which will decrease their risk of contamination. PSF has already distributed 121 markets in 5 areas (Santa Rosa, Paseito III, Molinos de Cafam, Usme).

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impacts of this project are the promotion of sustainable consumption and reduction of exposure and vulnerability amongst already disadvantaged groups. We aim to expand our distributions and reach other areas, including rural zones of Choachi and La Calera, and other districts of Bogota such as San Cristobal Sur and El Codito. Together, we can surpass the difficulties imposed by the COVID-19 crisis.
