We are raising money for our drum collective "Chenda melam troupe" involving eleven underprivileged children from Karimadom slums in Kerala to venture abroad and perform their music. These children are exposed to violence, poverty, abuse and neglect. Before the drum collective started they were school drop outs with bleak prospects. We have raised money for drums, lessons, now we ask please help change their lives forever with this educational experience for a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The challenges for the children in Karimadom slums include alcoholic parents, single parent upbringing, low income livelihood, drugs, neglect, homelessness and the poorest of living standards. The children are exposed to toxic, abusive interpersonal relationships including sexual, physical and emotional violence. They are raised in an environment that causes addiction, depression, anxiety and trauma. The children dropout of school and have few future prospects or people to turn to for support.
This opportunity gives the children the chance to experience a completely different culture as all involved have never left Trivandrum before. The children would gain a new perspective of life which will inspire them to become the best versions of themselves. The collective can gain valuable life skills and foster memories that they could only dream of. The trip will enable them to let go of past trauma and hardship to look ahead towards a bright, prosperous future and to believe in life again.
This venture will impact the Karimadom slum immensely by spreading awareness of the opportunities available, it will help create purpose, joy and belief in the community. The trip will create a shift in perspective in the area, encourage parents and families attitudes towards education. The children will have a life changing positive memory that will stay with them forever giving hope to the next generation. The children will share their experiences for years to come.
