Incessant rains in the catchment areas of Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh for four consecutive days from 30th September to 3rd October 2009 caused the worst flooding of its kind in recent memory. As the Krishna River rose to its highest point in 100 years, breaching occurred in many places, submerging innumerable communities along the river. In particular, the poor communities of Avanigadda and Nagalayanka were hit hardest as their shelters and belongings were completely washed away by flooding.
ASSIST has built over 18,000 houses in its 25 year experience. It will help build secure flood-resistant houses with latrine for 298 victim families, using the support of local contribution (ie. labour) and Government funding (60% already mobilised).
We will construct flood-resistant houses for 298 impoverished families in natural disaster-prone areas. This will guarantee security for 1,500 people from events that can wash away their lives instantly, and provide a foothold for overcoming poverty.
